Ho un blog di test installato la prima volta quasi tre anni fa, “era abbastanza sm-inchiato”, lento come una lumaca, adirittura il menu lato “admin -> settings -> reading” non aveva piu’ la parte superiore con la scelta pagina statica o singola. Il database “era abbastanza gigantesco” senza motivo, dato che non erano presenti post’s, categorie o links all’infuori di quelli installati dalla procedura installazione come default. Una sitemap.xml generata con il plugin “google xml sitemap generator” ciucciava 48mb di memoria inchiodandosi anche con il timeout impostato ad unlimited. Lo uso come “test di qualsiasi genere” su temi e plugins di ogni tipo e provenienza …
Ho sempre cercato di ridurre la dimensione del database ed ottimizzarlo con varie utility e/o plugins ed agendo direttamente da phpmyadmin, ma non ci sono mai riuscito in maniera soddisfacente ed efficace.
In tutti gli upgrade e downgrade fatti con qualsiasi versione di wordpress del ramo 2.x.x fino all’ultima 2.8.1 beta2 (Beta, Nightly, Ufficiali), il menu “admin -> settings -> reading” non si e’ mai riparato e messo a posto.
Ho fatto anche prove con la cancellatura nel database della vesione di wp installata per forzare l’aggiornamento completo del database partendo dalla versione 6124 ma niente da fare: il menu “admin -> settings -> reading” non si e’ mai riparato e messo a posto e il database era sempre inchiodato.
Ho voluto fare cosi’ l’ennesima prova anche con la wp 2.9 rare. Non ho fatto nulla di piu’ che cancellare la versione installata di wp per forzare l’aggiornamento completo del database partendo dalla versione 6124, come al solito, con la canonica sovrascrittura del pachetto completo via ftp sull’installazione gia’ esistente (nessun plugin disinstallato ed il tema non era quello di default).
Ebbene alla fine il tutto era magicamente rinato! Il database si e’ dimezzato almeno del 50% rimanendo perfettamente funzionante in tutte le sue funzioni e velocizzandosi come da una tartaruga ad una ferrari … nonche’ il menu’ “admin -> settings -> reading” si e’ riparato automaticamente come d’incanto!
LA 2.9 APRE UNA NUOVA ERA ED UN NUOVO APPROCCIO DI WP COME CMS?
Ora la generazione e/o ri-generazione della sitemap.xml impiega non piu’ di 2 secondi e consuma i canonici 18mb. Il blog e’ diventato una scheggia senza fare praticamente nulla oltre all’aggiornamento.
MA COME E’ POSSIBILE?

Nessuno visto che la rare la uso solo su un blog locale di test e la synco una volta a settimana e solo per test di traduzione, usare un prealfa (perche la rare ad oggi è quello) su un sito di produzione è altamente rischioso…
