in breve:
utilizzando un permalink del tipo %category/%postname% la paginazione delle categorie ritorna sempre una pagina 404.
esempio:
mioblog.it/miacategoria/ -> archivio miacategoria
mioblog.it/miacategoria/page/2 -> 404 – non trovato
mentre scrivendo manualmente
mioblog.it/miacategoria?paged=2 -> funziona (con gli url canonici disattivati)
da notare che al primo livello la struttura di paginazione funziona correttamente, ad esempio mioblog.it/page/2 funziona.
ho cercato sia qui che nel forum ufficiale di wordpress. il problema è risaputo ma una soluzione ancora non c’è.
adesso, nel mio piccolo pensavo a due tipi di soluzioni, quantomeno temporanee, per risolvere il problema.
la prima è creare un (semplice?) plugin che indirizzi i link dei tag next_posts_link e previous_posts_link con un poco elegante ma funzionale ?paged=x al posto di /page/x
la seconda è creare una regola di rewrite tramite htaccess per cui quando si verifica la condizione mioblog.it/qualcosa/page/x viene trasformata in mioblog.it/qualcosa?paged=x
in ambedue i casi avrei difficoltà a sviluppare la cosa da 0 autonomamente (ahimè) anche solo per provare, visto che non sono buono né con htaccess/espressioni regolari né con lo sviluppo di plugin per wordpress.
ma chiedo soprattutto il vostro parere sulla faccenda, poichè magari la soluzione c’è ed è anche molto più semplice di cosà¬.

ora non ricordo bene ma tempo fa’ ebbi la stessa problematica, la questione erano i permalink e il mio server che non mi permetteva la scrittura degli stessi su un file .htaccess, ti consiglio di fare questa prova, crea un .htaccess vuoto, caricalo nella root di wp, dagli i permessi di scrittura da parte del server chmod 755, se non erro devi controllare, e poi aggiorna la struttura dei tuoi permalink. cosi’ FORSE dovresti risolvere, ma non ti garantisco nulla, tentar non nuoce.

grazie della risposta Arturo, ma nel mio caso WordPress riesce a scrivere perfettamente il file htaccess.
UPDATE: mioblog.it/category/qualcosa/page/2 funziona…mi sa che qualcosa non è stato programmato al meglio nel rewrite php di wordpress, ma non voglio modificare i core files…chiederò nel forum ufficiale, forse lଠavrò più feedback.
